There are 2 types of E-Learning namely the Web-based Training (WBT) and the Computer-based Training (CBT).
WBTs are delivered via the Internet and run on standard browsers. Delivering learning in this manner has many advantages like easy access from computers anywhere. Courseware developed is often hosted in feature-rich LMS or LCMS. WBTs are an effective option for content that requires frequent updates. In addition to being self–paced, WBTs can also include collaborative online learning events, and learner progress and performance can be tracked and monitored.
CBTs can run on company intranets and stand-alone computers without the need to access the Internet. It can also be packaged for delivery as a standalone on CDs and DVDs. Such programs could be either media light or media rich, as long as learner machine configurations meet the defined minimum criteria. As the learning units launch as applications, learners would not need to install any specific software on their machines. CBTs delivered via a company intranet can allow for a certain amount of progress tracking. However, learning delivered completely using the standalone method via CD or DVD would generally be entirely self–contained units.
